What Is ISO Standards

What is an ISO Standard?

Dare to dream big….

An ISO Standard is a set of documented requirements, specifications, guidelines, or characteristics that can be used to ensure that materials, products, processes, and services are fit for their purpose.

ISO Standards bring realistic and measurable benefits and underpin the technology we rely on to ensure the quality and consistency we expect.

Who can benefit from using
ISO International Standards ?

Government

IOS Standards

Regulators can rely on ISO standards as a solid base on which to create public policy that helps further SDG goals such as human rights, water and energy efficiency, public health, and more. Recognized the world over, International Standards also help governments achieve their national and international commitments.

Industry

Industry plays a key role in achieving all the SDGs, and ISO standards help it do that by providing guidelines and frameworks on everything, from employee health and well-being to energy consumption to resilient and eco-friendly infrastructures.

Consumers

While contributing to the SDGs ranks high on the agenda of business leaders and politicians, many of the benefits are felt at the local community level. Reduced poverty, improved health, cleaner and more abundant water, and safe and secure infrastructures are just some of the benefits to be gained from implementing ISO standards.

ISO standards support the three
Pillars of sustainable development

Economic

ISO International Standards promote economic sustainability by facilitating international trade, improving a country’s national quality infrastructure 1) and supporting sustainable business practices. They cover everything from efficient farming methods to anti-bribery management systems.

Social

ISO International Standards promote social sustainability by helping countries and communities to improve the health and well-being of their citizens. They cover all aspects of social welfare, from healthcare systems and related products to social inclusion and accessibility.

Environmental

ISO International Standards promote environmental sustainability by helping businesses and countries manage their environmental impact. They cover such aspects as implementing an environmental management system, measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption, and encouraging responsible consumption.

quality-infrastructure

A quality infrastructure is a system contributing to governmental policy objectives in areas including industrial development, trade competitiveness in global markets, efficient use of natural and human resources, food safety, health, the environment and climate change. (Source : UNIDO)

We enable clients to meet and exceed the targets set out by the UN Sustainable Development Goal 9

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable Industrialisation and foster innovation. ISO International Standards support sustainable Industrialisation through internationally agreed specifications that meet quality, safety and sustainability requirements.

Covering virtually all industries, they give confidence to investors and consumers by creating an environment where products and services can flourish. Moreover, ISO standards provide a universal language, thus breaking down technical barriers to international trade. This is particularly important for developing countries as it allows them to compete more quickly in the global marketplace.

ISO also has standards that facilitate business practices and relationships. These include ISO 44001, Collaborative business relationship management systems – Requirements and framework, which provides a common platform to maximise the benefits of collaborative working and assist companies in establishing healthy business relationships within and between organisations.

Standards are also important tools in building safe and resilient infrastructures. For example, ISO has over a thousand standards for the construction industry that provide internationally agreed guidelines

and specifications on everything from the type and status of the soil these buildings stand on to the roof. These include not only minimum safety and performance levels, but a series of test methods for resilience as well. In the field of smart community infrastructures, for example, technical specification ISO/TS 37151 (performance metrics) defines 14 categories of basic community needs (energy, water, transportation, etc.) by which to measure the performance of smart community infrastructures, while technical report ISO/TR 37152 (common framework for development and operation) describes the planning, development, operation and maintenance methodology that ensures the interactions between multiple infrastructures are well orchestrated.

ISO International Standards provide a platform for ensuring interoperability, which encourages investment and supports innovation. Moreover, ISO’s ongoing work on innovation management will offer tried-and-tested frameworks that help organizations unleash their innovative potential. This includes future standards ISO 50501 on innovation management systems and ISO 50503 on tools and methods for collaborative innovation partnership.
